U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, is entering his 37th year in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressman Murtha is one of the most influential lawmakers in the Capitol. He is now the longest serving member of Congress from Pennsylvania.

His top priority has always been to look after the people of the 12th District, which includes parts of Somerset County. Until the most recent redistricting, he represented all of Somerset County. Murtha is chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

He has worked on economic diversification for the region. He has helped the area in environmental improvements, breast cancer and diabetes treatment and education, and numerous other municipal improvement programs.

Murtha has always been concerned with issues concerning veterans. He was in the Marines and volunteered to serve in Vietnam, where he was twice awarded the Purple Heart.

While people complain that he brings too much money to this region, that is what congressmen are supposed to do - advocate for the people they represent. Murtha has announced he is seeking his 18th term in office.

Happy anniversary, Congressman Murtha. The people of your legislative district are thankful for your years of dedication and hard work on their behalf.
